Introduction:

Cube is a first-person shooter video game that is both free and open-source. It's important to note that it's often mistaken for its engine, known as the Cube Engine, which is also open-source and zlib-licensed. The game and engine were developed by Wouter van Oortmerssen.

It is compatible with various operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, OS X, AmigaOS 4, AROS, iPhone, Wii, and Pocket PC devices with 3D acceleration like Dell Axim x50v. Cube employs OpenGL and SDL for its functionality and provides both single-player and multiplayer modes. The game also boasts an integrated level editor.

Originally launched in 2001, the initial release featuring single-player mode arrived in January 2002. The most recent update for Cube was rolled out on August 29, 2005. This engine has been utilized in other games, with the most well-known being AssaultCube, released in November 2006.

A successor to Cube, named Cube 2: Sauerbraten (or simply Sauerbraten), was introduced in 2004, utilizing the Cube 2 engine.

As of the August 29, 2005 update, Cube contained a total of 102 maps, encompassing 37 single-player maps and 65 deathmatch maps.

The single-player gameplay incorporates two modes: a straightforward single-player mode with fixed item and monster positions, and a deathmatch-style mode featuring respawned items and monsters (limited to ten per skill level).

Multiplayer gameplay comprises twelve modes:

  1. "Free For All": Designed for free-for-all and duel games, with no team play.
  2. "Coop Edit": Players can collaboratively edit maps either offline or online.
  3. "Teamplay": Similar to Free For All, but allies share the same team variable.
  4. "Instagib": All players start with full rifle ammo and 1 health, with no items available.
  5. "Efficiency": All players possess two ammo packs each with 256 health.
  6. "Insta Arena": Players stay dead until only one remains, then a new round starts.
  7. "Tactics Arena": Like Insta Arena, but players randomly receive two weapons and two ammo packs each.

The Cube engine was specifically designed for outdoor environments, in contrast to engines optimized for indoor settings like Doom and Quake. It operates using a pseudo-3D world model based on a 2D height map. While this brings certain limitations, it also allows for slopes and 3D props, enabling creative solutions like bridges with passages beneath.

Gameplay:

The engine employs a zero-precompilation philosophy, dynamically interpreting map data without recalculating elements like shadowmaps or BSP data. This supports real-time in-game map editing and multi-user collaboration.

The Cube engine has been repurposed for various other games, often tailored to meet individual project requirements. However, due to the intertwined nature of the engine and game code, changes in other games using the Cube Engine can sometimes have unclear implications.

Modifications to the engine can range from minor adjustments to significant overhauls. For example, AssaultCube, released in November 2006, and its subsequent fork AssaultCube Reloaded, released in December 2010, showcase instances of notable modifications to the engine.
